Drift

with Sara Black and Lia Rousset

Drift is a floating sculpture in the landscape of southeast Wisconsin — the area known the Driftless Region — and a site for exchange with residents and visitors. The sculptural form advances to shore on weekends where the artists serve spring infusions made from local farm produce and frozen glacial water harvested from Exit Glacier in Alaska — the furthest retreat of the Innuitian Ice Sheet that once cloaked this region.

Drift is at once a shadow image of the landscape’s ancient glacial past as well as a functional space serving frozen infusions. Drift crosses, metaphorically and through the body, the driftless region’s geological story with its current agricultural land use. The structure nods toward the hoop house form, an architecture familiar to the region.  In this, Drift aims to merge the near-at-hand with the distant and receding.
