with/draw

With Rebecca Keller

Creating new topographies, with/draw invites the audience to respond to the undulating surfaces of objects freshly dipped in plaster.  Taking our “harvested object”, items that would otherwise be thrown away, we mask their former uses and allow audiences to play with surface form and decoration. The plaster creates a unified aesthetic out of disparate materials and the pencil is playful potential. Devoid of the pressure to represent meaning through words or images people readily join in by taking up object and pencil, tracing and inventing contours.

The pleasure of drawing on a smooth surface meets the idea of a sewing circle or similar collective experience. Object and line come together on a table, a new tableau.

In conjunction with Art in the Open, Philadelphia and with special thanks to everyone at Bartam’s Garden.
